Our Commitment to Accessibility
RateCanopy is committed to ensuring that our website is accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. We strive to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities, and we believe that doing so makes our platform better for all users.
We view accessibility as an ongoing commitment, not a one-time task. We continually review and improve our platform to address accessibility barriers as we identify them.
Accessibility Features
We have implemented the following features to improve the accessibility of RateCanopy:
- ✓ Semantic HTML: Our pages use proper heading structure (H1–H3), landmark regions, and semantic elements to support screen reader navigation.
- ✓ Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements — including navigation menus, rate tables, filters, and forms — can be accessed and operated using a keyboard alone.
- ✓ Color contrast: Text and interactive elements meet or exceed the WCAG 2.1 AA minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text.
- ✓ Alt text: Images, icons, and graphics include descriptive alternative text for screen reader users. Decorative images are marked appropriately.
- ✓ Resizable text: Our pages are designed to remain usable when text is resized up to 200% without loss of content or functionality.
- ✓ Focus indicators: Visible focus indicators are displayed when navigating with a keyboard so users always know which element is active.
- ✓ Form labels: All form inputs include programmatically associated labels. Error messages clearly identify the field with the problem and describe how to fix it.
- ✓ Responsive design: The site adapts to different screen sizes and supports zoom up to 400% without horizontal scrolling on most pages.
- ✓ ARIA attributes: We use ARIA labels, roles, and properties where necessary to provide additional context for assistive technologies.
Known Limitations
While we work toward full WCAG 2.1 AA compliance, some areas of our platform are still being improved. Known areas under active development include:
- ‣Complex data tables in our rate comparison tools — we are adding enhanced screen reader support
- ‣Some interactive chart components — alternative data table views are being developed
- ‣Third-party embedded content — we are working with our partners to improve their accessibility
We address reported accessibility issues as quickly as possible and prioritize changes that affect the largest number of users.
